Whilst we assess the official global sales figures to find out if this was a record-breaking Prime Day or not, one thing's for certain: inflation is still top of mind for consumers. Will the deals be good enough to tempt shoppers to kick start their gift buying or - as suggested in a recent Reuters article - will "savvy" consumers wait until Black Friday to buy their big ticket items?
To better understand consumer demand, we analyzed products that reached a top 10 best sellers rank* across 12 categories on the world’s largest eCommerce retailer. Plus new for this Prime Day - check out which products we flagged as "breakthroughs": products that didn't appear in the top 10 in their categories in the week leading up to Prime Day.
Overall we saw that Prime Day in the U.S. can lead to a shake up of the category leaders, with on average 39% of products that reached a top 10 rank "breaking though" during the 2-day event. The category that saw the biggest shake up was "Toys and Games", which saw a 66% churn.
In the U.K. where Prime Day tends to be smaller we saw less "breakthroughs" overall though in some categories like Grocery there were a couple of examples of products that broke into the top 10 during Prime Day.
