This year’s Cyber Monday set a record for online sales, with comScore reporting that eCommerce sales reached $2.04 billion – making it the biggest online shopping day ever and the first to exceed $2 billion in sales. Walmart also announced that Cyber Monday was its biggest ever day for online orders.
Whilst comScore estimated that Cyber Monday saw online sales exceed $2 billion for the first time, Forrester’s estimate for Cyber Monday online sales was an even stronger $3 billion – with the research firm predicting that total online holiday sales will reach $89 billion, a 13 percent increase on last year.
“In general, consumers value the web for a few key reasons – it is easy to shop online, one doesn’t have to hunt for parking, web stores are open 24×7 and prices are often cheaper”, commented Forrester’s Sucharita Mulpuru. “Those truths ring true even more during the holiday season when shoppers are time-pressed and expect deep discounts.”
And according to Walmart.com, this year’s Cyber Monday was the biggest day in its history for online orders, with shoppers especially interested in its electronics deals.
The retailer said customers viewed more than 1.5 billion pages on Walmart.com between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday, with mobile accounting for about 70% of the traffic over that five-day period.
Shoppers were offered the option of in-store, same-day pickup after shopping Walmart’s cyber deals online for the first time ever this year. Walmart reported that Monday was also its biggest day ever for same-day pickup, with orders up 70% over last year.
