Upmarket grocery chain Waitrose has reported a strong performance for the beginning of the year. Sales jumped 19.7 per cent to £107.49 million in the week to January 5 at the John Lewis-owned Waitrose.
Frozen party food sales rose by 147 per cent while entertaining orders were up 157 per cent on last year. Sales of beers, wines and spirits jumped by more than 51 per cent compared to the same period last year. The bakery department also enjoyed a strong performance with sales up by 25 per cent.
“Shoppers took the opportunity to have one final week of treats,” said Mark Williamson, Commercial Director for Waitrose. Sales of frozen desserts grew by 82 per cent, including ice cream sales increasing by 30 per cent, gateaux jumping 130 per cent and tortes an impressive 320 per cent. The John Lewis Group operates 288 Waitrose supermarkets as well as an online and catalogue shopping service.
