New research published by Planet Retail reveals that more than three-quarters of UK shoppers will use Click & Collect by 2017 as the service sees “explosive growth”. Currently, 35% of UK shoppers in the UK buy online and pick up in-store, compared to 13 percent in the US and just 5% in Germany.
A new report from Planet Retail, “UK Click & Collect: retail fad or future of the high street” predicts that the proportion of shoppers using Click & Collect in the UK will double to 76% from its current base of 35% by 2017.
The retail analysis firm questioned 15,000 consumers in 10 key e-commerce markets including the UK, US, France, India and China.
Natalie Berg, global research director at Planet Retail, commented: “Click & Collect is poised for explosive growth in the UK. Retailers should be readying themselves for this massive shift in shopping behaviour and thinking beyond traditional collection points.”
Despite the UK being the most mature market for Click & Collect, however, only two-thirds of the top 50 retailers currently offer the service. Those retailers that have adopted it – such as John Lewis and Next – have reported strong results: the service currently accounts for 45% of Next’s online orders, whilst 57% of Click & Collect orders through John Lewis are picked up at Waitrose.
The importance of an omnichannel approach is further highlighted in another report from Columino, “Going for growth:strategies for retail success in 2014”. The study questioned 60 of the UK’s leading retailers and found that 90.9% of the retailers who took part in its research put web and mobile sites top of their investment priority list for the coming year.
As omnichannel shopping becomes increasingly pervasive, embracing these trends and continuing to adapt to technology-enabled changes in consumer behaviour will enhance a retailer’s competitive position. If you’re not reaching the consumer across multiple channels, you’re at risk of missing out on valuable sales which could be hard to recapture in the future.
