US shoppers spent a record $1.74 billion on Cyber Monday according to ComScore, with IBM’s Digital Analytics Benchmark reporting that online sales were up 20.6 percent over 2012. Amazon UK said it sold 4.1 million items on Cyber Monday compared to 3.5 million items last year, making it the retailer’s biggest shopping day ever.
Cyber Monday sales surged to a new record as more holiday shoppers went online to find the best deals and lowest prices.
Sales increased more than 20 percent from last year to $1.74 billion, with IBM reporting that Cyber Monday capped the highest five-day online sales period on record. Mobile devices accounted for more than 17% of Cyber Monday sales, up 55% from last year.
Shoppers have shifted more of their holiday purchasing online for the convenience the web delivers, as well as the lure of daily promotions.
According to ChannelAdvisor, Amazon sales jumped 46% on Cyber Monday whilst Walmart reported that it had its biggest online sales day ever, with Walmart.com handling more than one billion page views. The world’s biggest retailer has said that it will try to keep consumers buying online by continuing its promotions throughout this week, offering 200 online specials every day.
The Chief Executive Officer of the National Retail Federation commented: “The real winners are, in fact, the consumers, who are recognizing more savings through competitive pricing and great promotions being offered in every category.”
