Dutch retailing giant Ahold has announced plans to use bol.com, the eCommerce business it acquired in February, to grow its online grocery business.

Dutch retailer Ahold is preparing to announce a number of new online grocery initiatives in relation to its newly acquired Internet business bol.com.

As shoppers continue to bypass the high street stores to shop online, Ahold and other retailers are realising the importance of having a strong online presence to offer competitively priced products to consumers.

“We have a channel for online delivery called Albert and it is for food deliveries of Albert Heijn but also drugstore and liquor deliveries,” said a spokesperson for the company. However, that is a limited assortment; Ahold are keen to look at opportunities to expand the online offering “for all our brands with the bol.com channel”, said the group.

Bol.com is an online brand with a very loyal group of customers and it would be a great way to combine those brands,” explained its spokesperson. The company believes it can benefit “even more” by combining the online and offline offering better.

The new initiatives will be announced as they become available to customers.
